Our garden is officially ‘all in’. We thought it was before, but we kept slowly adding things here and there. We tried a lot of new things this (chard, tomatillos, peas, etc.). We are exciting to see what does well and already thinking about next year when our garden will be huge.
We’ve had pretty optimal growing weather the past few days, with lots of sun and humidity for most of the time and the occasional crazy rain storm. We also got a rain barrel this weekend which helps since the water we use isn’t so cold.
We should have strawberries next week (if I can keep the critters from getting them first) and kale shortly after that.
P.S. If anyone has any advice for keeping rabbits away please share. We have our intense jail structure (see 2nd picture above) covering our carrots and beets, but we learned afterwards that bunnies also love pea plants and chard. Save our veggies!
This weekend the weather was beautiful. We were sitting out on the patio enjoying the sun and longing for a cold drink. We didn’t really have anything that fit the bill so I made due with what I had.
I took a couple of handfuls of strawberries out of the freezer and put them in a pitcher with a few squirts of lemonade. Next I filled a pot with water and added about a quarter of a cup of sugar. I heated it on the stove until the sugar was dissolved. I added this to the pitcher. I took a potato masher and mashed up the strawberries as best as I could then filled it up with water. You can either let it sit for a while, then strain it or just strain it as you pour each glass.
If you don’t have frozen strawberries, fresh would work, you would just have to cook them a little to help draw out the juice.
And of course, fresh lemons would be preferably to bottled lemon juice, but as I said I was making due.
This is the perfect drink for sipping while enjoying the sun!
This weekend looks like it should be a good one (though really, aren’t all weekends great!). The weather forecast is warm and sunny and we have a few plans, but not too many.
Tonight there is going to be a big meteor shower. Hopefully the sky is clear so we can watch it!
Saturday we are going to pick up a rain barrel we ordered through a fund-raiser at the high school to build a green roof. Then in the evening we are going to see Cirque du Soleil! I’m very excited.
Sunday we will just do yard and gardening stuff. These days are my very favourite.

This is a super easy meal that I’ve been leaning on lately. You can make it with whatever you have and it only takes about 10 minutes to make, as long as you have some leftover cooked rice (or quinoa) in the fridge.
Here’s what you do:
Put a little oil in a pan. Add two eggs.
Use a spatula to scramble them, then cook.
Once finished take the onions out of the pan.
Chop some vegetables, or use frozen vegetables. Good choices are beans, cabbage, carrots, onions, spinach, and peas, but anything works. Just don’t forget the peas! I did and I had to add them in later once I realized.
Add the vegetables in the pan and saute for a few minutes.
Add the rice.
Throw the egg back in. Sprinkle a little salt and you are good to go!
I just received my first ever Influenster box. Influenster is a company that sends out new products for people to try out and then review. I think it’s pretty cool and a good use of social media.
Anyways, my box contained two sets of imPress Manicure by Broadway Nails. They are basically stick-on nails. What makes them special is the cool colours and patterns they come in.
You get 24 nails in 12 different sizes. All you have to do it go through and find the ones that fit your nails best then line them up. You wipe your nails with a little included wipe, then peel the backs and just carefully stick them on. You have to be careful to stick them on the right spot since it is pretty tricky to move them!
Pros: easy for people who are bad at painting their nails, non-toxic alternative to nail polish, good for people with not so nice nails (me!), really fun colours, cheaper and easier than a nail salon
Cons: a lot of waste (bulky packaging, and extra nails to throw away), tricky to use the first time, a little longer than I like my nails to be
Overall these are definitely not something I would wear everyday since they are a little long for me, but I think for events like parties they are a great product!

I call this everyday granola because I eat it everyday for breakfast. It’s my super simple, quick pared down recipe for granola. I make a big batch once a week. The method goes as follows:
Dump a bunch of oatmeal into a bowl. Add pumpkin seeds, oat bran, sunflower seeds, hemp seeds, ground flax and almonds. Stir it up and then add a couple drips something sweet. I use maple syrup. As well as a couple drips of oil. Stir it up again and then spread it out onto a pan (I cover mine in a silicone sheet) then pop it into a 250 degree oven for an hour. Let it sit until cool. Store in an air tight container.
You can change this recipe, adding and subtracting whatever you want. It’s is crunchy, healthy and delicious!

This is the thing I was about the climb.
We made it! 144 flights (plus about 10 additional ones that they don’t tell you about at the end). We did it in 35 minutes.
It was horrible at times, but I felt very proud afterwards. As an added bonus my legs weren’t sore at all the next day!
Well April was quite a month. We had snow and then we had rain with very little in between. Though we did manage to clean up the backyard a little, it was definitely not as much as I’d hoped. I think by this time last year we had our gardens planted. I’m really hoping for more sun this month.
May is going to be a pretty busy month. We have something planned for every weekend. This weekend is the CN Tour Stair Climb. My Mom and Nana are visiting for one weekend, we are helping someone move another and the only empty weekend we plan to plant the garden.
Because of this and the four jobs I currently have I will be keeping things light (looking back I realized I said that last month…). Some of my goals have carried over from last month because they just didn’t get done.
1. Clean out the garage and have a yard sale
2. Start planning meals again (too many nights of last minute decisions)
3. Clean up and plant flowers in the far back yard (if the tree branch gets removed)
4. Start walking/biking regularly again
